Drupal is content management software. It’s used to make many of the websites and applications you use every day. Drupal has great standard features, like easy content authoring, reliable performance, and excellent security. But what sets it apart is its flexibility; modularity is one of its core principles. Its tools help you build the versatile, structured content that dynamic web experiences need.
We already know what Drupal is? It’s somewhat like the WordPress, they are both a content management software. Right now, let’s get started on how to install it on your computer.
WordPress has been known for most online blogger, small businesses and other branding. Here’s my tutorial on how to install wordpress on your computer. However, you over think to upgrade or learn something new out of the box.
A new challenge, might be, to take on way of web designing and developing. If you’re new and wanted to add new skills on how to use a different framework for your job. Here is my answer, use Drupal.
Yes! Drupal. If you want to expand your knowledge on these kind of framework, this tutorial is right for you, specially for new users who are installing and using Drupal for the first time.
You must have:
- Working Computer / Laptop
- Installed WampServer.
- Prepare yourself to learn.
So get ready for a new experience!
Step 1 – Copy Drupal directory on your computer
First, You have to visit Drupal website to download the most updated version 8.2.5
Make sure you already installed the wamp server on your computer. If you don’t have it yet, visit the other tutorial on how to install wamp server on your computer.
After downloading, extract the folder from zip file. Once you extract a zip file, you will get a folder called, “drupal-8.2.5”. (This name changes with each version of Drupal)
Open this folder and you will find another folder of same name “drupal-8.2.5”. Copy this folder in ‘www’ folder of ‘Wamp’ directory on ‘Local Drive’ (Or the drive where you installed WAMP Server). local_path_drive: > wamp > www
Step 2 – Rename Drupal folder
Once you copy the drupal-8.2.5 folder in your “www” folder, rename that folder with your preferred site name to test. In this tutorial, folder is named as “drupal >> january >> test“.
Step 3 – Putting WAMP Server Online
Double click on WAMP Server icon which is on your desktop. After you Run WAMP Server application, a small icon will appear in your Notification bar. Once icon turns into green means “All services running good”.
Step 4 – Create Database
Open your browser, type in “localhost/phpmyadmin” or click on PHPMyAdmin option on wampserver icon on your taskbar. After logging into PHPMyAdmin, you need to click on the “Databases” tab at the top of the window and you will be asked to create new database. Take down note somewhere because database name will be needed while setting up database during Drupal site installation.
Step 5 – Installation Process
Now, let’s learn how to install Drupal on your local machine. Open your browser, type-in “localhost/www-folder”, on this tutorial, we use “localhost/drupal/january/test/” will look like this and you can see your newly created site name here. See Step 2.
6 Steps for Drupal Installation
A. Choose Language
On this page, you will see a language selection which is by default set to “English”. But, you can freely choose language you want. Then click on ‘Save and continue‘ button.
B. Choose Profile
Next page will be the Profile selection. You may choose between “Standard” and “Minimal”. Since, we just about to learn this framework, let select “Standard” profile and click on “Save and Continue button” otherwise you can choose “Minimal”, if you know what you are doing.
C. Verify Requirements
On this page, it will check if there’s any problem that might cause for the unsuccessful installation of Drupal on your system and not meeting its standard.
D. Set up Database
On this page, you’ll have to fill-out the required database information:
- Database Type : Select first option i.e. MySQL, MariaDB or equivalent
- Database Name : In this tutorial, we use “drupal-jan-test”.
- Database Username : root
- Database Password : You can leave it blank.
Then click on “Save and Continue” button.
E. Install Site
After configuring our database, you will see the Drupal installation progress page.
F. Configure Site
This would be the last part of the installation process.
- Site name: Here you can enter your website name
- Site e-mail address: This is an email id which is used by an organization to send their official emails. For ex.: [email protected]
- Username: Set your admin username
- E-mail address: Set an email address for notification purposes and admin email address record.
- Password: Secure an Admin password
- Confirm password: Confirm password for checking whether you typed it properly or not.
Finally, click “Save and continue” button.
Step 6- Drupal Installation Complete
Congratulations!!! You finished installing Drupal on your machine. It will redirect you to your site homepage.
