How To Install Drupal 8 on your Windows PC

What is Drupal?

Drupal
is a content management software. It’s used to make many of the websites and applications you use every day. Drupal has great standard features, like easy content authoring, reliable performance, and excellent security. But what sets it apart is its flexibility; modularity is one of its core principles. Its tools help you build the versatile, structured content that dynamic web experiences need.

Do we already know what Drupal is? It’s somewhat like the WordPress, they are both a content management software. Right now, let’s get started on how to install it on your computer.

WordPress has been known for most online bloggers, small businesses and another branding. Here’s my tutorial on how to install WordPress on your computer. However, you overthink to upgrade or learn something new out of the box.

A new challenge, might be, to take on the way of web designing and developing. If you’re new and wanted to add new skills on how to use a different framework for your job. Here is my answer, use Drupal.

Yes! Drupal. If you want to expand your knowledge on these kinds of frameworks, this tutorial is right for you, especially for new users who are installing and using Drupal for the first time.

You must have:
  1. Working Computer / Laptop
  2. Installed WampServer.
  3. Prepare yourself to learn.

via GIPHY

So get ready for a new experience!

Step 1 – Copy Drupal directory on your computer

First, You have to visit Drupal website to download the most updated version 8.2.5

Make sure you already installed the wamp server on your computer. If you don’t have it yet, visit the other tutorial on how to install wamp server on your computer.

drupal download site
After downloading, extract the folder from the zip file. Once you extract a zip file, you will get a folder called, “drupal-8.2.5”. (This name changes with each version of Drupal)

drupal unzip
Open this folder and you will find another folder of the same name “Drupal-8.2.5”. Copy this folder in the ‘www’ folder of ‘Wamp’ directory on ‘Local Drive’ (Or the drive where you installed WAMP Server). local_path_drive: > wamp > www

drupal

Step 2 – Rename Drupal folder

Once you copy the drupal-8.2.5 folder in your “www” folder, rename that folder with your preferred site name to test. In this tutorial, folder is named as “drupal >> January >> test“.

Step 3 – Putting WAMP Server Online

Double click on the WAMP Server icon which is on your desktop. After you Run the WAMP Server application, a small icon will appear in your Notification bar. Once the icon turns into green means “All services running well”.

Step 4 – Create a Database

Open your browser, type in “localhost/PHPMyAdmin” or click on the PHPMyAdmin option on wamp server icon on your taskbar. After logging into PHPMyAdmin, you need to click on the “Databases” tab at the top of the window and you will be asked to create a new database. Takedown notes somewhere because the database name will be needed while setting up the database during the Drupal site installation.

Step 5 – Installation Process

Now, let’s learn how to install Drupal on your local machine. Open your browser, type-in “localhost/www-folder”, on this tutorial, we use “localhost/drupal/january/test/” will look like this and you can see your newly created site name here. See Step 2.

Technology

Windows 10 has a variety of different apps, that you may find useful, and a few you will probably never need such as Money, Maps and People.

You might find some apps that take up very little space on your device. But, if you want to uninstall them, Windows 10 doesn’t want you to uninstall.

Some apps allow you to uninstall them in the normal way. Just right-click on a selected app in the Start menu and select “Uninstall”. This trick appears to work for the included Get Office, Get Skype, Get Started, Microsoft Solitaire Collection, Money, News, Phone Companion, and Sports apps.

You can watch it or read the details below. (Don’t forget to subscribe and share this video.)

You can also uninstall bloatware apps your PC manufacturer has installed using this trick. However, Microsoft’s other included Windows 10 apps can’t be removed in this way.

How to Uninstall Windows 10’s Built-in Apps

Before you uninstall or restore apps, make sure no other programs are running aside from Windows PowerShell.

1. Open the Start menu, search for “PowerShell,” right-click the PowerShell shortcut, and select “Run as administrator.” Agree to the UAC prompt. 2.  Enter a command from the below list for the program you wish to uninstall. Copy and paste one or more of the following commands into the PowerShell prompt, pressing Enter after each one to remove the apps you don’t want on your Windows 10 system:

Hiding the least needed apps of your computer as well as the bloatware from your view without actually deleting it from the system, meaning you can restore it at any time.

How to Restore Windows 10’s Built-in Apps

If you want to restore the preinstalled apps, you can get them back with a single line of PowerShell code. Again, we need to open a PowerShell window as an Administrator. Copy and paste the following line into the PowerShell window and press Enter:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

By this command, all previously default apps will be restored.

Permanently Deleting the Apps

If you want to remove everything from your computer using the PowerShell, we’ll be going to use the DISM command. DISM stands for Deployment Imaging Service and Management,  is relatively powerful and can be used to service a Windows system in many different ways. In this case, we’ll use it to remove the additional apps from your system.

First, we’ll check to see the entire bloatware spectrum by using this command:
"DISM /Online /Get-ProvisionedAppxPackages | select-string Packagename"

You should see the complete list of installed apps. We are going to use the package names in the list to begin removing them. To remove them, use the following code:
"DISM /Online /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:PACKAGENAME"

Where PACKAGE NAME is taken from the previous list generated. See sample below image, I’ve chosen to remove the 3dBuilder package. Once, you go over with your chosen apps to be removed successfully, you’ll need to restart your computer for the command to take full effect.

Clutter or De-clutter, that Is the Question?

In the end, it all comes down to your personal preference. If you are a Windows fanatic, then you go with all the preinstalled apps and have a good time. But if not, don’t stop yourself on what you should or should not have on your PC.

It’s your choice.

What is your choice and why?

WordPress

Do you know that you can install WordPress on your computer for learning purposes and testing?

Yes, It’s true.

Working with WordPress on your computer is a great way to test plugins, do some updates, change site design and other website upgrades before pushing them your live websites.

On these tutorials, I’ll show you how to install WordPress locally using WAMP.

The process of installing WAMP on your computer is also known as setting up a local server environment (“localhost”). Most of theme designers and plugin developers install WordPress on their local server environment to speed up their own development phase.

It’s a good idea to use WordPress on a local computer, in order, to test any major/minor changes to your site. This way, you can immediately fix any issues before it reaches to your live website.

Note:
If you install WordPress locally on your computer, then, it’s only viewable within your local network (inside your house). If you want to create a WordPress blog that is publicly available over the internet, then you need to have a domain name and web hosting. I’ll recommend that you follow this guide on how to install WordPress.

Are you ready? Shall we.

What is WAMP?

WAMP stands for W for Windows, A for Apache, M for MySQL and P for PHP. WampServer is one of the software for Windows computers to be a local server environment. You will need WAMP to be able to start and use WordPress on Windows environment. There are other clients for Windows such as XAMPP, but on this tutorial, we’ll use WAMPServer. It is free and easy to use.

First, Installation of Wamp Server on your PC

Visit my previous tutorial on how to install WAMP on your computer.

Once you are done with the installation, launch WampServer.

2. Set a Database for WordPress

Next, we’ll need to create a blank MySQL database for WordPress. WampServer comes with phpMyAdmin, a web-based application to manage MySQL databases. Click on the Wampserver icon in the Windows taskbar and then click on phpMyAdmin.

The phpMyAdmin login screen will open in a new browser window. By default, the Username will be root, and you can leave the password field blank.

Once you’re logged in, click on Databases in PHPMyAdmin to create a new database for WordPress. You will be asked to choose a name for your database (we used “Jan-test”). After that click on the Create button.

3. Installation Process for WordPress

Now, we’re going to install WordPress. You will need to download a copy of WordPress from WordPress.org. After downloading the zip file, you have to open and extract it from the downloaded folder.
After that, you need to navigate the folder where you installed WAMP. On this tutorial, we installed it at E:wamp64, so we’ll refer to that folder going forward. Keep in mind, it may be different on where you installed the program. Paste the WordPress folder into the DRIVE-LOCATION:wamp64www folder.
You can rename the WordPress folder to anything you want, we manage to set as under DRIVE-LOCATION:/wamp64/www/WordPress/January/test. This will be the URL of your local WordPress site, so be sure to choose something you’ll remember easily. For the sake of this tutorial, we renamed our WordPress directory to /WordPress/January/test. Now open your web browser and go to //localhost/WordPress/January/test
The WordPress database setup will start automatically. First, it will ask you to select your language.
After that, it will show you some information about setting up your database. Just click the Let’s Go button when you’re ready.
On the next screen, you’ll need to provide your database information. The database name will be the one we made earlier, on this tutorial. In our case, we named it “Jan-test. Your default database username will be root and you can leave the password blank. Just let the table prefix, as it is.
Next, click on the submit button and WordPress will automatically create a configuration file on the designated WordPress folder you’ve made earlier. After this, you will see on your browser informing you that, WordPress has successfully connected to your database, and you can proceed with the installation. Go ahead and click the Run the install button. now you can run the WordPress install on Windows
Next, you can fill out the installation Information form. You will need to set your site title, admin username/password, and admin email address for local website details.

Once you’re ready, press the Install WordPress button. Then, it will redirect to the login information box.
After logging in, it will proceed to your WordPress Dashboard. It means you have successfully installed WordPress on your computer using WampServer.

Congratulations!

You deserve a pat at your back.

Below are some additional tips and tricks:

1. Troubleshooting Skype Error

If you have already a Skype installed and running on your computer before the WampServer installed, then it may not be able to work properly due to a conflict with Skype. The cause was both Apache and Skype using the same port 80. Here is the simple fix for this. Open Skype and go to Tools » Options. Click on Advanced and then Connections. Uncheck the box that says Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections. Save options and restart Skype.

2. Enabling Permalinks

Permalinks will not work by default on your local server environment. All your URLs will look like localhost/sample_site/?p=18. If you go to Settings » Permalinks and use one of the other options, then it will show you “page not found” errors. We have already written about a solution here that will show you how to enable custom permalinks in WAMP.

3. Migrating from local server to Live server

Here’s a separate guide on how to push WordPress from a local server to a live site. Hopefully, you’ll find it helpful when you are ready to deploy your local site to the production site. Remember, if you want to start a blog for other people to see, then it’s time to get a domain name and hosting provider.

Technology, Video

If you are looking forward to practicing in PHP, the first thing you want is to set up a local development environment. On Windows, WAMP is a popular choice. Let me show you how to install it on Windows 10.

Note: WAMP and XAMPP are the choices you can have for windows. For Linux, you can try a LAMP and for Mac is MAMP. All I can say is that get yourself a development environment quickly and start coding. Let’s start it!

Here are the following installation steps by step.

Step 1 – Download the Wamp server from the Wamp Server website.

Step 2 – Scroll down to the download section.

Based on your system, choose a 32-bit or 64-bit version of the installer. I choose 64 bit, PHP 7 version because this is the latest release of PHP and I’m using a 64-bit OS distro as well.

Step 3 – Click the appropriate link to download the Installer.

A. You should see something like this. Click the download direct link to start the download.
B. If this is the first time to install wamp, don’t forget to install as well the  Visual Studio 2012: VC 11 vcredist_x64/86.exe On the same browser window, you will be redirected to Sourceforge webpage to start the software download.

Step 4 – Locate the downloaded file.

By default, it should be in your downloads folder if you have not changed the default settings.

Step 5 – Double click the installer to begin the installation.

Double click to proceed to our installation. Now you should see the Windows User access control dialog box. Click Yes to continue.

Step 6 – The dialog box that appears will now ask you to choose your language for installation.

Select your preferred language from the drop-down list and click OK. We will be using English for this demonstration.

Step 7 – You should see the Wamp Server Licence agreement dialog box.

Click “I accept the agreement” radio button and “Next” to continue.

Step 8 – Proceed to the information dialog box.

This is to inform you about the required component that your windows machine has for the Wamp Server to function correctly. Get the most updated version of the Microsoft VC++ redistributable package. You can still continue to install Wamp Server without issues even without downloading it first. But after installation when you start the wamp server and get an error message complaining about the missing file. Or rather, click Next to Continue.

Step 9 – Select the location where you want to install Wamp Server.

You can accept the default or choose on different drives to install it and click next.

Step 10 – Select the Startup Menu Folder.

In this dialog box, you have to select your chosen folder in which the program shortcuts should be placed. If you select the default, it would be placed in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Wampserver64.

The 64 at the end of Wampserver 64 is to tell you that you will be using the 64-bit version of the application. If you don’t see 64, then you will be using the 32-bit version of the application.

Step 11- Finally, the Ready to install dialog box.

You can review the details and make the changes by going back by clicking the Back button. Once you click Next, installation begins.
Click Next to begin the installation. Now, you will see the installation begins.

Step 12 – Select default browser dialog box

Now, you should see a dialog box, it will ask you if Internet Explorer should be made the default browser or if you want to change the default browser to something else. Click NO to accept Internet Explorer as the default browser.
If you want to change the default browser to say Google Chrome / Firefox, click yes and you should see something like this:
Again the choice between Internet Explorer and Chrome or anything else is purely your own choice and I don’t see any issue on accepting the default and leaving it as Internet explorer.

In Windows 10, Google Chrome executable is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application folder by default. Go to this folder and select chrome.exe and click open. If you click cancel, it would again default to Internet Explorer.

Step 13- Select default Text Editor.

I would suggest you can accept the default, which is notepad by clicking No. It’s just that if you want to edit apache or PHP config files such as http.conf or php.ini, it would open in notepad. Still, if you want to change it you can click Yes and navigate your preferred executable .exe file of your text editor. But, as I said, the default notepad is perfect.

Step 14 – Launch PHPMyAdmin Information dialog box

After the installation is complete, you will see a dialog box informing you that the user name for PHPMyAdmin is “root” and the password is not set, that is there is no password for it. Click Next to continue.

Step 14- Installation Complete.

Now, you should see the installation complete dialog box. Click Finish to exit the Wamp Server installation wizard. Wamp Server should now be installed on your system.

Step 15- Start WampServer

You can now start the Wamp Server by double-clicking on the shortcut wamp server icon on your desktop or alternatively launch it from the start menu. After the Wamp Server starts, you can see the Green icon on the taskbar as shown below. Initially, it will be Red (establishing a connection), then turn orange and then Green (good connection). When it turns green, it means all the services are now running properly. Else, the Wamp Server has not started. Please note that you will have to give administrative privileges for the Server to start. That is just clicking Yes when you see the UAC confirmation dialog box when you click the Wampserver icon to start the server. When you right-click on the icon, you can see the options to start, stop and restart the WampServer along with other option which I leave for you to explore.

“I’ve been in-love to planner, notebooks, paper, stickers, ephemera, pens, and stationery!” There, I admitted it – so commit me to be a planner paper addict… boho! I know planning and collecting papers (stickers as well) are fun things to help keep organized and even relieve stress, so I enjoy it tremendously.  While I use many different thingies to keep me on track and my planner simple and pretty, I think it’s an individual choice for many. I want to share with you a starter kit or list of planner essentials and supplies to get you on your way. Whether it be for pretty planning or just to hoarding supplies on hand, I hope this post helps you on your journey.

Like any individual, it will come in one’s taste, preference, and needs. While I prefer a binder style planner, I can appreciate those who like coil bound ones or prefer electronic styles. Here is a list of planners that you can look into and possibly select from.

This can be bought Internationally thru their online sites:

KIT – Keeping It Together Planner:  It is a coil-bound planner similar to that from ECLP.  I never yet tried this planner but soon once I have it (I’ll let you know).  These planners are made from a small company that sells on Etsy and they offer lots of writing room, quotes each day and everything a blogger or planner lover would need.

Punctuate Planner – Barnes & Noble:  These handy little planners come in all kinds of styles, sizes, and prices.  They are binder style and you can reuse them.  Punctuate also offers paper planners or a variety of calendars for your needs.  At an affordable cost, this would be great for students or someone starting with planning.

Get this: National Bookstore branches

Best Buy calendars A National Bookstore staple, these un-fussy planners in no-nonsense colors undoubtedly do the job, and they also come in pocket and A5 sizes.

Those are just a few planners you can find throughout your planner search.  I have a few others like DIY planner (from old binder), PNJ, a generic pocket planner (served as my wallet and shopping list), a KikKik cute planner medium size (the most expensive I bought so far), wishliststudio spiral planner (as my reflection journal) and Daily planner from National Bookstore (for my work).  Each one can be used for various things and offer you many uses for years to come.

If you decide to opt for a binder style planner, remember – if you take care of it, you can get years of use out of it. See if you can find a binder that will work for you, size and ring wise.  My collections (pictured below) is one that I used for my everyday agenda, it was reasonably priced and works well as a planner too should I decide to use it as such.

planner-i-own

Choosing the planner is just the start but making sure you have all the proper accessories, that’s the fun part.  Of course, you need things like pens and other items to keep you on your planning journey.  Here is a list of a few things I like to have on hand when planning or things I make sure to buy if I’m out.

Pens – Of course, you need this for writing.  I use a variety of pens in my planners but since I color code much of what I write, I’m constantly using pens that have a similar color range.  There are several pens available for use, it all depends on your preference, what you like and how you’ll use them.

Sticky Notes, Page Tabs – You can get a variety of sticky notes and page tabs in all sizes, colors and designs.  Use your imagination with this one and look for what will work for you, your budget and your style.

Page Markers, Bookmarks, Paperclips (anything to mark your pages or your insert) – This is fun where you can create your own as well as find awesome and fun designs throughout the web and in stores.  I love to make my dashboard or bookmarks, paper clips, and page markers, but I also find awesome local online shops that do great ones as well.  If you can’t buy online, you can visit NBS, Mall’s stationery section, bookstores, and other local arts & crafts shops.

Journaling Cards, Stationary, Quote Cards or Project Life Cards – These are not a necessity, but if you are looking to add some inspiration or a little pretty to your planning, see if you can find these cheap and try it out.  I like to take scrapbook paper and write in my quotes (or stamp them) and insert them into my planner.  The options are endless, so use this opportunity to practice your creative side.

Washi Tape & Stickers – I am addicted to washi tape and have a pretty large selection to choose from.  I think washi tape is my lazy way of decorating because I can always add pretty to my planner with a bit of washi without going too in detail and feel like I’ve decorated it.  Washi has been my favorite go-to for pretty planning and it’s versatile in many ways.  You can find washi in all sizes, designs, widths and even now – shapes since many are showing up die-cut and not just regular tape-shaped.  You can use them for a variety of purposes, including decorating your planner.

Find them at your local store or anywhere that sells them and have fun.  Stickers, well you can get those everywhere and for everything.  Find a sticker sheet or two, or three that makes you smile and use it to decorate your planner till you were satisfied.  I make and print a lot of my planner stickers. You can also print on your own or grab some free downloadable items.

There are a few extra goodies you can have on hand – but like everything I discussed here, they are certainly not required or needed. Here are a few and what I use them for:

Scrapbook Paper – I love to create my dashboards and dividers as well as my journaling cards.  The scrapbook paper is fun to allow you to customize what you want and make use of your binder in your way.

Laminating machine and/or paper-cutter – you can certainly use scissors (oops – I didn’t mention that one above) and you can find laminating sheets like those from Scotch or 1M, but I find both useful and I use them often.  Search around and see what works best for you and your budget.

Tape Adhesive – you can find these at any store in the scrapbook or arts and craft sections.  It’s an easy to roll out adhesive that allows you to bond or attach things inside your planner.  I love using these for everything I would tape down – they are permanent and secure.

Gift bags, gift wrap, etc. – You don’t need these, but should you have one with a design you like, save it and turn it into a decoration in your planner.

Stamps and Stamp Ink Pads – They are reasonably priced and pretty awesome.  You can find a variety of traditional wooden block stamps or clear stamps from a variety of stores as well as the ink pads.  Again, this is optional but the options are endless.

Remember, getting organized with a planner or even pretty planning is all about creativity and making tools work for you and your needs.  Everything I listed and discussed here is not in any way required nor needed to get the job done.  A basic planner with necessities like a pen will get the job done just as well.  I love designing my planner, though I find that some days I don’t have enough time to do so.

Planning allows me to get creative and it also inspires me to keep up with my planner, update and be motivated.  If you find that you want to get started with planning, but even with a nice planner and some fun pens – you can be in the habit of looking at it everyday… try to add glamor on your planner and see if that will work for you and have fun. The options are endless and in the end, is a fulfillment of your heart’s content.
